TAS Firsts compete in P. Yeend Shield (Division 2, GPS Basketball Round Robin)

The TAS Firsts Basketball team travelled to Sydney to compete in Division 2 of the GPS Basketball Round Robin competition last weekend.

They played four games at Sydney Boys’ High School, in extreme 43ºC heat, against teams from Scots, St Ignatius’, Newington and Kings.

In their first game, Scots played a full-court defensive press against TAS from the onset, which made it very difficult for TAS to score. Aaron Buckley rolled his ankle in the first 3 minutes of the game and was unable to take the court for the rest of the competition. TAS lost this game 4-36.

The second game was against Riverview and TAS held their own in the first half, going into half-time 8-11. Unfortunately, TAS got into a bit of foul trouble in the second half, losing both tall players Mark Carolan and James Kennelly, and ended up losing 10-27.

TAS played Newington (current leaders of the competition) in their third game and, again, found it difficult to score against a well-drilled team, going down 7-38.

A “pumped-up” James Kennelly led the charge against Kings in TAS’ final game. The teams were very close going into the half-time break, but Kings pulled away in the final stages of the game and defeated TAS 14-32.
The entire team played extremely well and, despite not winning a game, showed improvement with each game. Their teamwork and “never-say-die” attitude were impressive and all boys should be very proud of their efforts.

TAS Firsts: Ben Wright (c), PY Lei, Alex Crabb, Matthew Yeung, James Kennelly, James Mohun, Aaron Buckley, Eric Ng, Mark Carolan & Will Lambell. Mr Alex Smith (coach)
