Kayaking Nationals Report

On 7 January, four TAS boys gathered at the Nymboida Canoe Centre to compete in the National Kayaking Championships. The boys were Nick Allen, Alex Cres-Meldrum, Tiernan May and Chris Bohlsen. Every single member of the team won a medal.

The river was almost at maximum flow, much higher than the average of 30% flow. This meant the river was stronger, faster and wilder. Before the official competition even began, Nick and Alex competed in the Australian Wild Water championships. As a team they won a gold, a silver and a bronze medal each, with Nick winning another bronze medal in the C1 event.

When the Schools Championship got underway, the boys continued their winning streak with Nick and Alex winning a silver medal, and Chris and Tiernan on a bronze. Then, the team of Alex, Nick and Tiernan won gold in the K1 teams event. At the pre-national competition, Alex and Nick continued to win, earning yet another silver medal for C2.

Finally, the boys competed in the Open Nationals Competition. Other competitors in this competition included Will Forsythe, a TAS old boy and the currently ranked No 1 kayaker in the country. Nick and Alex won another silver Unfortunately, the competition had to be cut short on 13 January, as the Nymboida river was threatening to flood.

Still, the competition was a massive success and showcased the best of TAS canoeing potential.
