Who
is the camp for?
The prime objective
of the Talented Students Forensic Science Camp is to develop skills
in solving very complex real-life problems. Problems that will take
days, not hours or minutes, to solve. Problems that require the focused
intelligence of a group of enthusiastic individuals working together
as a focussed team.
The problem solving
tasks would be a challenge for any secondary school age group but we
restrict the campers to students who are in year 8 (NSW and other states)
and year 9 (Qld), in order to achieve a relatively homogeneous social
group.
The Camp is not
targeted at students with great strength specifically in Science. It
challenges a broad range of skills. If your main skills are in written
expression, they will be of value to the group you work with and you
will find the Camp no less exciting.
So,
in a nutshell, who is the camp for?
Students in year
8 (year 9 Queensland) who are intellectually capable, intensely enthusiastic
about learning and who get a buzz out of solving problems. If you are
not all of these things you will not enjoy the camp. If you are all
of these things it will be an incredibly stimulating and unforgettable
experience!
But make no mistake,
the crime-solving problem that will face you at the Camp will not be
easy. Read the words of a past camper who had always found school problems
to be a pushover.
"Originally,
when I first decided to take part in the Forensic 2002 Science Camp
I had not a clue of what even 'forensic" meant and I was unsure
what I was heading into. I did not know what to expect but I considered
myself capable of tackling any task I was assigned to - nobody had
ever stimulated me with a problem that would take more than a few
hours of hard work to solve. Upon arrival at The Armidale School I
was told that it would take my team days to solve the problem given
to us. I instinctively decided that this was my opportunity to beat
all the other teams and solve the problem quickly with my team mates.
However, I
was faced with a problem requiring such heavy thought that my team
mates and I often found ourselves so perplexed by the very intricately
woven web of the problem, all we could do was sit and think for hours
in silence.
This challenged
me like I had never before been challenged. The whole Camp was a new
learning experience that I had never before even touched upon. The
Camp opened me up to new ideas in the way of problem solving, forensic
science, teamwork and what an Australian court was really like. .
. . . . . . . . . . . I did not find my experience from this camp
easy to forget . . . . . . . . this camp teaches you what you will
probably never learn anywhere else - and you have fun while you are
learning too."
Katherine may be
exaggerating just a little when she claims to have sat for hours in
silence, but she puts her finger on the point that 99% of campers would
agree with; the Forensic Camp is very different from anything else you
have experienced. It is a very powerful learning experience and its
great fun.
