Memorial Windows deemed ‘a hidden treasure’

Posted 20th March 2014

A War Memorial window by one of the nation’s best stained-glass artists has been described as a ”hidden treasure” by a Melbourne expert researching stained glass memorials that commemorate Australian war service. Dr Bronwyn Hughes, who is working on a book entitled Light Everlasting: ANZAC Memorials on stained glass, said the three windows designed by M Napier Waller in The Armidale School’s War Memorial Assembly Hall were “very important” in understanding his work.

Napier Waller designed many war memorial windows, but is perhaps best known for the stained glass and mosaic designs in the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Dr Hughes spent a few hours at TAS on 18 March, photographing the Waller windows but also war memorial windows in the Chapel.
