TAS gains a win in first round of GPS rugby competition

Posted 1st June 2017

The Armidale School’s First XV have had a successful start to their GPS Third Grade defence, defeating St Ignatius College, Riverview 15-10 in Sydney on Saturday.

With two weeks break from their last match against Sydney Boys’ High and travel to Sydney, the team were pleased with “a pretty important first win,” coach Alan Jones said.

“The boy splayed reasonably well in the first half but take a while to get their eyes into the game. Tries came from winning phases, not from the mistakes of the opposition which helped the boys maintain their composure on the field,” he said.

With unconverted tries to Wally Davidson and Oscar Alcorn, the score was 10-3 at half time.

“Riverview scored an opportunistic try under the posts and easily kicked the extra two points which put the pressure on, but TAS fought back through passages of play enabling Dan Lethbridge to go over the line and securing the game for TAS,” he said.

Mr Jones said it was a very physical encounter but solid preparation against The Scots College (Thirds) in Sydney this Saturday, and then at home to Sydney Grammar’s Firsts on 17 June.

In lower divisions Riverview won the majority of fixtures.
